Where Lehigh Valley congresswoman Susan Wild stands on impeachment ahead of vote |
U.S. Rep. Susan Wild, the Lehigh Valley’s Democratic
congresswoman, faces perhaps the most politically charged vote she’ll take
since joining the U.S. House.
Two articles of
impeachment against President Trump are being brought to the House floor on Wednesday,
and Wild will support both of them in what she said is a
difficult decision.
“I have heard from many constituents across the
7th District on this issue” the congresswoman said in a statement. “It is
important to me that they know that I carefully considered their perspectives,
although I am aware that some among them will inevitably disagree with the
decision I have come to.”
The Lehigh Valley
is a swing district, and Wild’s decision wasn’t a foregone conclusion to
political observers. Although she won her first term in Congress last year by a
10-point margin, Republicans are targeting her seat in 2020; GOP candidates have already announced they’ll run.
The National
Republican Congressional Committee lambasted Wild, who campaigned as a
moderate, for her decision to support impeachment.
“Susan Wild’s
support for Democrats’ deranged impeachment of President Trump proves she’d
rather please her political masters in Washington than do what’s best for her
district,” NRCC spokesman Michael McAdams said in a statement.
U.S. Rep. Susan Wild, a Democrat from Pennsylvania's 7th
Congressional District covering Lehigh, Northampton and southern Monroe
counties, takes part in a town hall meeting Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, at
Muhlenberg College in Allentown.
But Wild argued that it was the testimony and
evidence presented over the past few weeks, not political pressure, that swayed
her.
“It is beyond
clear to me that President Trump, through his interactions with Ukraine – an
ally under attack by Russia – abused the powers of his office to put his own
political interests above the interests of the American people,” she said. “To
make matters worse, President Trump then deliberately obstructed Congress’s
constitutional oversight responsibilities.”
Wild has
published her complete statement on her official website and it can be read at

As of Tuesday,
the Pennsylvania delegation in the U.S. House was split along party lines on
whether to vote in favor of impeachment.
The Associated
Press reports:
All nine
Pennsylvania Democrats in the House now support the articles of impeachment.
All nine
Republican House members from Pennsylvania have said they will vote against the
articles. That includes U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of suburban Philadelphia,
who on occasion breaks party ranks to vote with Democrats.
In New Jersey, U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski, a
Democrat whose 7th Congressional District in New Jersey includes Hunterdon
County along with Phillipsburg and southern Warren County, has said he will vote yes on impeachment, The New York Times
reports. U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat whose 5th Congressional District
in New Jersey covers communities in Warren and three other counties, issued a
statement Monday night on his support for impeaching the president.
Trump is the fourth U.S. president to face impeachment
proceedings and the first to run for re-election at the same time.
